The plot revolves around a division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) operating out of Boston and investigating some unusual events that have been surfacing all over the globe. The occurrences include instances of teleportation, obscure diseases, psychic powers and even chimeras.

Main character of this series is an investigating officer Olivia Dunham. This officer has been assigned the job of investigating the case of crazy scientist, Walter Bishop who has been admitted in an asylum. Dunham chooses Peter Bishop, son of Walter Bishop to help him with this case. The characters of these leads are played by Anna Torv (Olivia Dunham), John Noble (Walter Bishop) and Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop).
